COLUMBUS, OH – Reminger Co., LPA shareholder, Kevin Foley, served as local counsel for the Institute for Justice, a non-profit, public interest law firm that protects property rights nationwide, to help Kermit Warren, a hardworking African American grandfather, recover his life savings wrongfully withheld by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

In November 2020, DEA agents seized $28,000 from Kermit Warren at John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. Kermit was traveling home with the money after inspecting a tow truck he considered buying for his scrapping business. The government believed he met the profile of a drug dealer and took his money, but did not arrest him. The DEA refused to return the money and instead filed a civil forfeiture action in Federal Court to keep it. In August 2021, the Institute for Justice announced that it would defend Kermit’s life savings from the federal government’s predatory civil forfeiture practices. The Institute for Justice partnered with Kevin Foley to represent Kermit, document the legitimate purpose for his trip, and confirm the legal sources of his money. The government dismissed the case against Kermit with prejudice and is returning the money.

"If the Institute for Justice and Reminger did not represent Mr. Warren, the government would have improperly taken his life’s savings. Unjust civil forfeiture practices can harm innocent people,” remarked Kevin Foley.
