Bob West presented "The Illusion of Competence: Surviving the AI Wave through Bans, Disclosures and Bots" to 30 Ohio probate magistrates under the continuing education program of the Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College. Bob surveyed Ohio state and federal courts treatment of the use of AI, which include bans and disclosure requirements, outlined practitioner obligations under the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct, and warned against adjudicative distortion through the use of AI-generated filings by pro se parties. Bob also distributed prompt templates and a summary of various court’s orders on the use of AI. The presentation concluded with a live, interactive demonstration of some common uses of AI the magistrates may encounter from pro se parties.
