Allison M. McMeechan and Paul R. Shugar Selected as Officers for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s Estate Planning, Probate, and Trust Law Section

CLEVELAND, OH – We are pleased to announce that Allison M. McMeechan has been selected as Secretary and Paul R. Shugar as Treasurer for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s (CMBA) Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law Section. They recently started their one-year term for the CMBA section that provides articles, CLE programs, lunch meetings, and pro bono/community service as part of their programming efforts to engage membership.

Allison McMeechan:

Allison has focused her practice on elder and special needs law, including estate and long term care planning, estate and trust administration, probate and guardianships.  She serves as the Chair of Reminger's Elder Law and Special Needs Planning practice group.

Allison has published articles and has spoken in the areas of probate, estate planning, government benefits, and special needs trusts. Her audiences include individuals, bar associations, non-profit organizations, and other professional organizations.

Allison is an Accredited Attorney with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  In addition to the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Law Section, she is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys National and Ohio Chapters, the Ohio State Bar Association's Estate, Trust & Probate Law Section, and Elder & Special Needs Law Committee. Allison is also a member of the Board of the Consortium Against Adult Abuse (C3A), the former chair of the C3A's Education Committee, Hospice of the Western Reserve's Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the Cleveland-Akron Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the Board of Directors of Milestones Autism Resources, and the Board of Directors of Ohio Living Breckenridge Village.

Allison received her B.A. degree with a major in Criminal Justice Studies from the University of Dayton in 1999 and her J.D. degree from Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 2004. She has been recognized as a Rising Star by Ohio Super Lawyers Magazine, and was honored last year by Crain’s Cleveland Business in their “40 Under 40” Class.

Paul Shugar:

As a member of Reminger’s Probate Litigation Department, Paul has trial experience litigating million-dollar estate, trust, and guardianship issues such as undue influence, power of attorney abuse, and financial exploitation. An award-winning journalist who worked at daily newspapers around the country before becoming a lawyer, Paul employs the writing and investigation skills he developed as a reporter to help people in a legal setting.

In addition to heading the firm’s New Lawyer Training Program for associates, Paul regularly lectures on First Amendment issues to first-year students at the Ohio University Scripps School of Journalism. Paul is an active volunteer with non-profit organizations that reduce hunger in the Cleveland area and serves on the Board of Directors with Celina Nonprofit.

Paul received his J.D. from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, and his undergraduate degree from Ohio University. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
